Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1729 -, 1747. 4°, circa 25,5 x 20,5 cm., Together more than 8000 pages with 4 engraved frontispieces, 69 mostly folding engraved plates, 8 engraved folding maps and many engraved vignettes in the text. Contemporary full calf with gilded spines and covers, armorial supralibros, gilded fore-edges, marbled endpapers Bernard 163; Graesse I, 10. Amply illustrated set of the first eleven volumes of this series that ran until 1809 with fifty volumes published altogether. Parts I-IV here in the second edition from 1736-1747 as mentioned by Graesse, parts V-XI in the original printing. - Some browning or little spotting, somewhat rubbed and with minor unobtrusive defects to the bindings (small wormholes, few stains, few small chips). - From the library of Barthélémy-François Thoinard (1683-1752; conseiller au Parlement de Paris et fermier général) with his coat of arms on both covers of all volumes. Very decorative set.
